Cropping Images for Social Media Without Losing the Subject

Start with the subject

Before choosing dimensions, decide what the viewer must notice first. Faces, products, logos, and important text should sit away from the extreme edges because platforms often add overlays, rounded previews, or responsive crops.

Use the right shape

Square crops are useful for profiles and grid posts. Portrait crops work well for feed visibility on mobile. Wide crops fit banners and thumbnails. Story formats need vertical framing and extra room for interface controls near the top and bottom.

Check before posting

Preview the image where it will be used. A crop that looks balanced in an editor may feel too tight inside a social card. Keep a copy of the original so you can create alternate crops for each platform.
